Premier Oil is turning its exploration focus to the central North Sea during the next couple of months after the firm made the decision to plug and abandon its Biawak Besar-1x exploration well offshore Indonesia after it reached its target depth.
The UK-based independent oil firm reported Friday that although logs for the Biawak Besar-1x well, on Natuna Sea Block A, showed better-than-expected sand quality, the sands were water wet.
The results from the well will be incorporated into the firm's existing 3D seismic database to determine the cause of the amplitude response and its implications for the future prospectivity of the targeted play. Elsewhere in Indonesia, the firm is awaiting results (expected in June) from the current drilling of its Benteng-1 frontier exploration well on the Buton Block (Premier equity: 30 percent).
In the UK, Premier is expecting results in May from its Stingray well on UK Block 15/13b in the central North Sea after the well was spud on April 9. Premier holds 50-percent equity in the Stingray prospect, which is targeting a Mesozoic play on the northern margin of the Central North Sea.
Meanwhile, Premier is set to begin drilling the Carnaby prospect on the Premier-operated Catcher acreage (UK Block 28/9, Premier equity: 50 percent), where it is targeting Eocene reservoirs, in early May with the Sedco 711 (mid-water semisub) rig. This rig is then scheduled to drill the Coaster prospect (Premier equity: 50 percent) on the neighboring UK Block 28/10a.
