STAVANGER, Norway – Statoil (OSE:STL;NYSE:STO) has awarded Trac ID Systems a frame agreement to supply radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, systems, and associated services.
These will deliver lifetime tracking of drill pipe for Statoil’s operations on the Norwegian continental shelf, and optional international deployment.
Trac will provide its Drilling Operations Tracking System (DOTS) for Statoil’s drilling operations, RFID tags (TracTag) for downhole equipment, and management of drill pipe data across the different operations.
The DOTS system is the result of a five-year joint industry development project between Trac ID, Statoil, Eni, and ConocoPhillips. It uses RFID technology to automatically identify each drill pipe joint entering and leaving the well, generating what is claimed to be a 100% correct well inventory (drillstring tally).
Based on a combination of tally and real-time data from the drilling control system, the DOTS accumulates and stores usage data and calculates fatigue development for each drill pipe joint in real time during the drilling operation.
This helps control the condition of the entire drillstring before, during, and post-drilling, reducing the risk of drillstring failures. Additionally, the system verifies the status of each individual element before entering the well in order to prevent the use of non-compliant equipment.
